+DOG+ - "Public Disgrace" (Placenta Recordings #138) received an excellent review in The Big Takeover Magazine!



"+DOG+ have many faces, but less frequently documented is their intense live show. Public Disgrace compiles three live recordings from a stellar lineup consisting of +DOG+ mastermind Steve Davis, Ed Nervo (ex-Final Solution), Lob (Instagon), Geordan and Bobby. (On a side note, I actually saw +DOG+ perform once around late 1999/early 2000 at Al’s Bar in Downtown LA where Bobby’s performance was so violent he damaged a house mic and poor Steve had to pay for it.)

“Sayings,” recorded in Sacramento, CA, displays +DOG+ at their very best with 14 minutes of static, amplified electronics, various effects and Bobby’s unmistakable vocals echoing through the collage of frequencies. Recorded in Los Angeles, CA, “Knots” ups the intensity with darker tones and Bobby screaming like crazed homeless man in an alley. The final title track, also recorded in LA, is an eight-minute blast of churning metal-on-metal grinding that barrages the room with sonic violence right to the very end.

When it comes to noise, +DOG+ are the undisputed kings of the West Coast, and Public Disgrace only heightens their status, showing that their live set can easily match anything they assemble in the studio. All hail the mighty +DOG+!!!"

"Black Mayonnaise officially came into existence on August 6, 1991 out of nowhere, crudely inspired by old Godflesh, old Carcass, old Butthole Surfers, old Chapeau, and Big Black. "Stuff that frogs would like" was recorded on that day in a very sloppy/spontaneous manner, and "Off-shore sludge" was recorded the following day under identical circumstances. These earliest recordings have been described as "garage Godflesh" and "like Happy Flowers with a drum machine". The gestalt-like change into the "space sludge" sound that occurred in 1992 was the result of purchasing a 4-track, as the previous tapes were recorded with merely a boombox. During the mid-90's this project seemed to mysteriously transmute into somewhat of a living entity with a will of its own, independent of its creator and coming/going as it pleased. This factor would be a partial reason for the random disappearances/resurgances over the years. The somewhat obscure slang-term for decomposing sewage/sediment seemed appropriate for the early sound. This obscurity led to widespread discrimination by the more serious grim-faced metalhead/hipster-noise mamas-boy types living at home earning money off ebay/allowances and enough spare time to post 65498 [this is oftentimes a low estimate] times a day on numerous message boards... as it was misinterpreted by many as "some lame white-trash noisecore band named after expired food". Though by no means has this project ever been one to take itself too seriously. The other crowd of discriminators possess a much higher level of integrity. These are the individuals who have listened to the project and have empirically reduced it to simplistic weird sounds created by an overactive imagination and not "music" at all; more or less”

“Well, it's 12:30 a.m. on a work night. My shift starts at 6:30 a.m. My original intention was to write some sort of tribute to Hunter S. Thompson's intro to The Great Shark Hunt and talk about how I'd like to jump out of my window after completing this... and then I'd attempt to be funny by saying that if I did I'd just wind up landing in some cold wet leaves and I'd have to walk back inside all damp and clammy. But I won't, even though I kind of already did. What you have here is a collection of Black Mayonnaise tracks attempting to briefly cover every phase of existence going back over the past 20 years. I made sure to include some unreleased material... Gems? No. Just unreleased stuff... but I stuck to my original philosophy and only used tracks that I like to listen to personally. Yep, August 6th 2011 was the official 20 year anniversary since this all began. I think that most people probably knew I'd never grow up, even during those years when I was quite absent. Thanks to Jay and Placenta for doing this and helping get some of this old bullshit back out into circulation. And thanks to everyone else who has joined me on this ride.”

You may have heard of the groups fearless leader LOB from his direct involvement in the organization the the longest running Noise festival in the U.S. “Norcal Noisefest”, or you may have seen him perform live during one of his 500+ Instagon shows. "Placenta Recordings is an obscure label from the States and organizes a lot of concerts and events and has their own studio, art gallery and theatre. Jay Watson is the man behind this active label and since 2005 he released 150 CDRs. "Pink Eye" by Instagon is one of his latest releases. Pink Eye contains nine composition which are parts of live recordings in 1998, 2007 and 2011. Lob and 14 other musicians played on these live-events. The mood of the several recordings is diverse. Some tracks are full of improvisations with guitar, bass and guitar added with some strange wicked sounds. The lack of these improvisations is that the atmosphere of the concert room where the band plays with the light, audience, smell and sounds are important parts to make the music interesting. Now it is just a recording of a live-event and that is something else than a jamming band which makes the audience wild. The recordings which are more noise orientated are worth listen to. The first track for example is a great mix between noise scratches and some experiments with guitar and bass. I prefer sounds like this and jamming sessions with a Black Sabbath riffs, I love to play it or hear it in a bar and go wild over there.
